BRIDGEWATER — Acting Chief John Schlatz reports that the Bridgewater Fire Department extinguished a two-alarm fire Thursday at a commercial building.
Dispatchers received their first call reporting a fire at 1221 Bedford St., a metal structure, just before noon. Crews responded immediately. Upon arrival, they saw heavy smoke coming from the second floor. Firefighters soon began an interior attack but withdrew because they were overcome by heat.
Acting Chief Schlatz ordered firefighters out of the building, and they began a defensive attack.
The fire was brought under control within 45 minutes. The building was declared a complete loss.
Bridgewater Fire Department crews at the scene included Engines 1, 3 and 4, Ambulances 4 and 5, and Tower 1.
Firefighters from East Bridgewater, Middleborough, Raynham, West Bridgewater and the Whitman Rapid Intervention Team provided mutual aid. Crews from Halifax and Taunton provided station coverage.
This fire remains under investigation by the Bridgewater Fire Department and the State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit attached to the State Fire Marshal’s Office. According to a preliminary investigation, the fire does not appear to be suspicious.
