Bridgewater Fire Department Responds to Structure Fire on Bedford Street

BRIDGEWATER — The Bridgewater Fire Department responded Tuesday evening to a structure fire on Bedford Street.

At 9:44 p.m., Tuesday, April 14, Bridgewater Police reported that they saw black smoke emitting from a commercial building at 707 Bedford St.

On arrival, crews found heavy smoke pouring from a two-bay auto garage. Crews made entry through the front entrance and extinguished a fully involved dump truck in the garage.

The crews quickly knocked the fire down, although flames extended into the storage area above the garage. The overhaul was challenging due to heavily boarded windows.

The building was unoccupied. Two Bridgewater firefighters suffered minor injuries at the scene but did not require medical attention.

The following Bridgewater Fire apparatus responded: Engine 3, Engine 4, Tower 1, Ambulance 4, Car 1, Car 2 and Car 6.

Mutual Aid was provided by the following Fire Departments: East Bridgewater (on scene), Easton (Rapid Intervention Team), Middleborough (for station coverage) and West Bridgewater (on scene).

“All four of these fire departments have provided mutual aid to three structure fires in Bridgewater over the past week,” said Bridgewater Fire Chief John Schlatz. “We’re grateful that we’re surrounded by neighboring communities with incredibly professional and brave fire departments. Our cooperation not only protects property in town, but these reciprocal relationships help to keep Bridgewater’s residents safe. After a week like this, our relationships with these departments are crucial to getting the job done.”

Bridgewater Fire Command cleared the scene at 12:02 a.m. Wednesday, April 15. The fire is under investigation by the Bridgewater Fire Department.
