Bridgewater Fire Department is pleased to announce that its senior outreach program, Bridgewater Seniors First, was nominated for the Department of Fire Services 2016 Fire and Life Safety Educator of the Year Award. This is the second year in a row that the program has been nominated for the award. The award, which is presented each year at the Public Fire and Life Safety Education Conference, recognized “individuals or teams for their commitment to making our world safer from fire and other preventable injuries”.
Bridgewater Seniors First is a senior outreach program with a goal of promoting the safety, well being and education of our senior population and making their homes safer. The program fosters the existing relationship between the senior population and the Office of Elder Affairs and Public Safety Departments and has incorporated partnerships with Bridgewater State University, the Home Depot and FM Global.
The program partners trained professionals from the Bridgewater Fire Department with Outreach Workers from the Office of Elder Affairs to enhance an already strong program run through the Office of Elder Affairs. The program, along with the support of our partner organizations provides the senior members of our community with a free well being check and safety assessment in the safety and privacy of their own home.
In the past year, the program has identified and remedied safety hazards in more than 130 homes. These potentially life-saving initiatives would not have been possible without the dedication and commitment of the team involved.
